Let&#8217;s look at how <em>Health Literacy<\/em> is defined:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<ul class=\"dIfcd _8UBmS\">\n<li class=\"_3TiTE\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-0jsb7253\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">&#8220;Health literacy is the ability to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services to make appropriate health decisions.&#8221; (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) (HHS)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-090o1787\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">So, how is this working out for us in the U.S.?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<ul class=\"dIfcd _8UBmS\">\n<li class=\"_3TiTE\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-ns18z257\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">The U.S. ranks last in a comparison of 11 high-income countries in terms of general health. This is despite the U.S. spending the most on healthcare compared to these nations.*<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-tmwji4265\" class=\"XFQsU\">\n<div class=\"_4zxWp eu4Ur\">\n<figure class=\"-NM7M\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-hook=\"imageViewer\">\n<div id=\"tmwji4265\" class=\"AE5h6 _3EJkQ bk5lD\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/8524f0_9a90b14eaf8e4c30b214ecc8d2fd71b5~mv2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_1009,h_380,al_c,lg_1,q_85,enc_auto\/8524f0_9a90b14eaf8e4c30b214ecc8d2fd71b5~mv2.jpg\" alt=\"health care system performance rankings comparison\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/www.goaldriven.com\/post\/what-is-health-literacy-in-chiropractic-and-natural-health-care\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/8524f0_9a90b14eaf8e4c30b214ecc8d2fd71b5~mv2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_1020,h_385,al_c,lg_1,q_85\/8524f0_9a90b14eaf8e4c30b214ecc8d2fd71b5~mv2.jpg\" data-load-done=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-f86j11022\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">So, it can be reasoned that Americans aren&#8217;t getting much information on health care. Our people are fatter, sicker, and more depressed. Our kid&#8217;s health is getting worse.* <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<h3 id=\"viewer-5gvrk1062\" class=\"-R2Zz aNwlI -bt26 _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"_8FJTI\">IMPROVING HEALTH LITERACY IN CHIROPRACTIC AND NATURAL HEALTH CLINICS<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-4syir1102\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">However, as the above study illustrates, there is a direct connection between educated patients and better health. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-3fccm265\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">We already know this from experience in practice. I just thought it was interesting that there was a <em>study<\/em> showing this fact: better educated patients are healthier. They also refer more people for care.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-c0ev2267\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">Here are 3 approaches to improved patient education, though there are many others:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<ol class=\"bu-Wp _8UBmS\">\n<li class=\"_3TiTE\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-yq4oa269\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"zKS-7\"><strong>Inform while you perform<\/strong>. Educate your patients each day about some aspect of health care. This is also called <em>Table Talk<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"_3TiTE\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-wd0sy271\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"zKS-7\"><strong>Care Class<\/strong>. It used to be common procedure in practice building to have regular new classes for patients. Not only were they educational, but entertaining. They built community. They also increased patient referrals, patient retention, and improved the motivation of those giving the talks. They cost next to nothing, except for the doctor&#8217;s and staff member&#8217;s time. In some offices, refreshments were added. In one chiropractic clinic I worked with would award attendees with clinic t-shirts and provide great pizza and had a full class! <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"_3TiTE\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-4bdjq273\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"zKS-7\"><strong>Newsletter with a case study<\/strong>. When your patients are not in the office, send them a short note. Maybe add a video. Doesn&#8217;t have to be professional, just authentic and describe a successful case or some health tip that they can use. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-5w35o2375\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">I think that because we work and live in a health profession that we take health knowledge for granted. And it can be easy to assume people know what you know. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-44fsu2419\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">They don&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-abfmz2463\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">There is a chasm between what you know about health and what your patients know. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-3vu7w2507\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG -bt26 _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\"><strong>How full would your schedule be if your patients, and their family and friends, knew what you knew about how to stay healthier? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-qevr52551\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\"><em>Health literacy<\/em> is a term from the medical world that has obviously failed to bring about health literacy. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-dlhby2679\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">No surprise there. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-tfit1287\" class=\"bbl5c dkFHG _8UBmS _-7CKp\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"zKS-7\">But in your corner of the world, you can change this and increase true health literacy with all your patients.
